Design For Review - Posted at 09:40 on 2 October 2008 by Administrator
As I mentioned in an earlier post I'm working on a new design for the site.
It's a part of cleaning up code and separating design from code.

Please have a look at the screenshot below and feel free to post your comments.
This is a draft and work in progress, but it will give you a hint on the result.
I want you to all to have seen it before it goes live.

Screenshot of design
If you have suggestions for further improvement, please leave a comment and I will look into it.
I have tried to keep the basic layout and still fit some new features.
Templates will also be a part of the redesign, and new ones will be added.

Looking forward to your feedback

New design - Posted at 12:46 on 16 September 2008 by Administrator
I'm currently working on a new design for the site.
The current layout has been online for over 2 years and I feel an update is in place.

The work is almost done, some touching up remains and then of course a lot of beta testing before it will be released. I'm planning on showing a screenshot of the new design before the official release so you will recognise it when it goes live.

Please leave a comment if you feel something should be on the portal page. Something that you are missing today perhaps and want me to include in the new design. Speak up now and I'll see what I can do.

Simply follow the on screen steps and when you click Save Changes your secret emailaddress will be shown on the screen.

Mobile settings - secret address
Now you are all set! Pick up your mobilephone when you visit the airport next time and send a report directly from the airport!

Statistics - Posted at 05:43 on 2 January 2007 by Administrator
We're all interested in knowing how many are reading our posts.  Not that it's super important, but always fun to know.

We are now happy to announce the new statistics pages.  Statistics showing you how many uniques users who have read your post, and how many are visiting your blog.

This is how you find it and what it looks like:

After logging in and selecting your blog, you will find a new item in your menu. Click it to view your stats.

There are 2 pages available, General and Top entries.

General statistics - Shows the number of visitors to your blog, per day and month.
Top entries - Shows the 15 most popular entries you have written and the number of unique visitors.

General Statistics for December for one of our members.

Top entries for one of our members
Statistics page showing the 15 most read entries. Number in brackets are the number of unique readers.

The entries are linked so you can click on it to see which entry it is, if you are in doubt.

As you can see on your statistics page, it was installed on december 8, 2006.
So, all statistics count from that date and forward. Statistics for older entries are not accurate, it only shows how many visitors you have had since december 8, 2006.

Enjoy!
Adding Video - Posted at 19:37 on 11 December 2006 by Administrator
I thought I'd explain a little how to add videos to your blogposts. It's really simple, but at first it feels impossible. So, here's how you do it.

1. Start writing the post like you always do. Make a little space where you want the video to be.

2. Switch to source mode by pressing the icon in the toolbar as shown below.
(My example below shows the source text in Swedish "källa", it might show in you own language)

If you are used to making webpages, then this code is familiar to you, if not...don't worry you don't have to do anything with it.

It looks like this:

Now, place your cursor where you want the video shown, and paste the embed code you copied from the video site, www.SpottersVideo.com.

So it looks like this:

Personally I usually enter just a little more text below the code you just pasted. Like this:

Now, switch back from source mode to normal edit mode by pressing the same source button in the toolbar.

That's it! The video is now added to your blogpost.
Continue writing if you want, or simply press the "Add New Entry" button to publish your post.

Congratulations, you have just added video to your blog!

This is what it can look like:

I hope this will help you all to show some great videos in your blogs!
Adding photos - Posted at 11:29 on 8 December 2006 by Administrator
As one of the new features changes the way you upload a photo to your blog entry, I think it's a good idea for me to explain the easiest way to do this and get the right size.

So, follow me here and I show you how to upload a photo and post it with the correct size.

1. Click the insert image icon in the toolbar.

2. Then browse though your harddrive to find the image you want to publish, and click upload.

3. You will get a confirmation box saying the upload was successful. Click ok.

4. You  can now  see the path to your uploaded image and a preview in the bottom window.

5. Now, look at the image's dimensions. In my example the width is 1280 pixels. If your image is larger than 500pixels wide, then change the digits to 500 in the width box.

6. That's all, now click insert Image in the bottom right corner and you're done.

Try it, I think you will find it very easy!
Upgraded Software - Posted at 11:00 on 8 December 2006 by Administrator
Finally I updated the blogsoftware, something I've been planning  for a long time.
The new version brings many new features which will make it more fun for all of us.

One important thing that is improved is the signup process. It will not stop new spammers, but it will make it harder for them. I have enabled new signups again, so we're back to business again.

Some of the new features are:
  • New Editor, you will see it when you start to write a new entry. It can be a little slow to load the first time, but it will run smoothly after that. The new editor is compatible with all browsers and is very user friendly.
One thing to remember is that you have to enter the uploaded pictures width manually!
This is important.  Read my post with detailed info on uploading photos.
  • Flag blog for content. This gives you all a possibility to inform me about a blog whcih you think is spam or other questionable content. You will see the link in the userbar on the top of each blog. Use if you see something before me that shouldn't be here.
  • Comment management. You can now list all comments made on your posts. Easy to check for spam and to reply to questions and comments. Easy interface to view, edit and delete comments.
  • Users listed by comments on portal page. Just like I have the most users by entries, you can now see who's writing most comments.
  • Who's Online ?  On the portal page you can now see who's logged in at the moment with their avatar.
  • Latest entries updated with new layout.
  • No top ad on free blogs. I removed the advert on top of all blogs. Only the userbar with login, signup  and flag content.

More info on these updates will follow, i hope you will like them.
No new signups - Posted at 22:18 on 3 December 2006 by Administrator
Unfortunately I had to disable the signup to the site. This is very drastic measures, but it was necessary. The site is being attacked avery 30 minutes by spammers. After spending 3-4 days deleting the spam posts, and banning the mail domains I gave up. Disabling the signup process was the only working thing I could do. I'm monitoring the server log files, and will enable the signup process as soon as I have them under control again.

It's very frustrating to disable the signup, as new members are always very welcome. But, please be patient. New members will be welcome again shortly.

New server - Posted at 21:10 on 17 October 2006 by Administrator
Last night we moved the complete website to a new server. All uploaded files were sucessfully moved as well as the complete database. The work was done just before midnight and the DNS were set for the new server. Depending on the update rate for the DNS servers around the world, you should have reached our new server this morning.

The move to the new server will give us more access to implement cool features, upgrades and such. We are not depending on other sites for the server speed anymore. There were over 2000 websites hosted on our old server. Now we are practically alone.

Naturally, things can go wrong during a move this big. If you find anything, please use the support function inside your blog manager and we will get right on it.

Forum closed - Posted at 18:45 on 13 August 2006 by Administrator
Due to exessive spamming of our forum, we decided to close it for now.
The activity has been very slow in the forum which means we might remove it permanently.

Right now we're looking at various measures to stop the spammers and re-open the forum again.

The idea behind the forum was to offer a place for support to our SpotterBlog users.
Giving quick help if there was ever any questions on how to use the most in your blog account.
The help is still there, use the support form in your blog manager and we will assist you as soon as we can.

Please post a comment of you have any opinion on wether we should have a forum or not.
Aviation Related - Posted at 09:16 on 15 July 2006 by Administrator

The SpottersBlog is a free blogsite for all aviation enthusiasts. This means the majority of your post should concern aviation in one way or another. Naturally you can post personal blogs too, but the majority and main purpose of your blog should be related to aviation.

There are so many free blogsites out there for the general blogger that you should have no problem finding one if you wish.

SpottersBlog offers a lot of free space and features for aviation enthusiasts, and we hope you will respect that.

More templates - Posted at 10:26 on 12 June 2006 by Administrator
We're happy to announce 3 new aviation templates for your free blogs. More templates are coming too, so keep your eyes open on the templates page! If you have any special requests, please post them in the forum. Input is always welcome!
Image Resizing - Posted at 08:28 on 22 May 2006 by Administrator
We have now installed an automatic image resizing system. This means that you no longer need to
resize the images in your photo editing software (Photoshop).

When you are writing a blogpost, and wich to include a photo, use the button "add image" in the toolbar just like you have always done.
Now you have 2 options,  small and medium.
Medium is the best option, it resizes the images to 500 pixels wide. Perfect for your blog.
Small resizes to 320 pixels wide, in case you wish a smaller image.

Your Photo Album is still as it used to be. No resizing. Use it to upload and show bigger images.

We hope you will enjoy this improvement!
