Another day in paradise (aka Kirkwall Airport)

Leuchars, the final chapter

17:35, 23 September 2008 .. 1 comments .. Link

Nothing makes what I do feel more worthwhile than when someone takes the time to comment on the site and for that I thank Emma, Rui and Gwenda.

Your comments gave me the much needed kick in the backside to finish this part so here they are starting off with this dutch Display F16, one of the noisiest aircraft at the show

This next picture was taken as I looked in disbelief at how slow this aircraft can fly. This next picture is not the aircraft climbing, it is dead slow level flight as the smoke trails will show you

Then it was time for the Red Arrows.  Due to the low cloud they could not complete their acrobatics but they did complette their formation flying.  The next couple of pictures give you an idea.  Please remember they are not out of focus, the visibility was poor.

Then it was time for the main event, as if the Red Arrows were not the highlight, enter XH558

There is only one word to describe this aircraft, majestic, it's size and power are awe inspiring.  Here is a picture of it lining up on the runway behind the Red arrows which gives you an idea of its size.

Sadly the weather did not allow it to fly but it did 2 high speed ground runs and the howl form the ngines combined with the earth shaking was unbelievable

One day I hope to see this aircraft fly but as it costs about 1.5 million to keep in the air each yera, they are desperately seeking a corporate sponsor.  So if you are reading this, any donations can be made by visiting the Vulcan to the sky website.

The last picture for this visit was taken on my way out and I am sure the Harrier needs no introduction.

Thanks for taking the time to read.  More photos from Kirkwall to follow and Emma, a picture of the elusive Captain will be on shortly.

Take care

Neil
